Damara - Toplaai

Near the Gobabeb Research Center is a local tribe called the Toplaai.

When we arrived the village seemed rather deserted – with no one about – but we soon found out that the children are sent off to school and those remaining tend the herds of goats so the only people left in town are those too old to do the field work. We spoke with one of the matriarchs of the tribe – a beautiful and lively woman. She and her daughter spoke with the guide who translated the “click” language of the Damara so that we could ask questions. She was a wonderfully cheerful person and a joy to meet and talk with.
